A 7-Day Interview Prep Plan That Actually Works

You’ve landed an interview — congratulations. Now you have exactly one week to go from “I hope this goes okay” to “I’m walking in ready.” Here’s how to use every day strategically, without burning out or over-cramming.

Day 1 — Deep Research Day

Spend today understanding the company as thoroughly as possible. Don’t skim — go deep.

  • Read the company’s website, mission, and recent news
  • Study the job description line by line — what skills are repeated?
  • Research the industry landscape: who are the competitors?
  • Look up your interviewers on LinkedIn (if you know who they are)

End the day by writing down: 3 things this company values, 3 challenges they likely face, and 3 ways your skills directly address those challenges.

Day 2 — Story Mining

Review your career history and pull out 6–8 strong STAR stories. Focus on stories that demonstrate: leadership, problem-solving, collaboration, resilience, creativity, and results under pressure. Write them out in full — don’t just outline them in bullet points. Writing forces clarity.

Day 3 — Practice Core Questions

Work through the 15 most common interview questions out loud. Not in your head — out loud. Record yourself if possible. Focus on:

  • Tell me about yourself
  • Why this company?
  • Greatest strength / weakness
  • Describe a challenge you overcame
  • Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Day 4 — Role-Specific Prep

Prepare for questions specific to your field. If it’s a technical role, review fundamentals. If it’s a sales role, think about your metrics and pipeline approach. If it’s a management role, prepare examples of how you’ve led, coached, and resolved conflict.

✅ Look at the job description again. The required skills ARE the interview topics. Prepare one story for each key requirement listed.

Day 5 — Mock Interview

Find a friend, mentor, or career coach and run a full 30-minute mock interview. Ask them to give honest feedback — not just encouragement. Pay attention to filler words (“um”, “like”, “you know”), pacing, and whether your answers have a clear ending.

Day 6 — Light Review & Logistics

No heavy prep today. Review your notes lightly, finalize your questions to ask the interviewer, plan your outfit, confirm the interview time and format, and test your tech if it’s virtual. Go to bed early.

Day 7 — Interview Day

Morning routine matters. Exercise briefly if you can — it reduces cortisol. Eat a proper meal. Arrive (or log in) 10 minutes early. Before you walk in, take three slow, deep breaths. You’ve prepared for this. Trust the work you’ve done.

🎯 The mindset shift: You’re not going to prove yourself to them. You’re going to have a conversation to see if this is a good mutual fit. That reframe reduces anxiety and increases genuine presence.
