“Tell me about yourself.” It’s the first question in almost every interview, and it sets the entire tone for everything that follows. Yet it’s the question most candidates answer worst \u2014 either rambling through their entire life story or stumbling through a confused summary of their resume.<\/p>\n

Here’s the framework that transforms it into a 90-second power statement.<\/p>\n

\ud83c\udfaf\u00a0The goal:<\/strong>\u00a0This isn’t a biography \u2014 it’s a pitch. You’re summarising who you are, what you bring, and why you’re here, in a way that makes the interviewer immediately want to hear more.<\/div>\n

  • Past (20\u201325 seconds)<\/strong>\u2014 Where did you start and what have you built? Mention your educational background (briefly) and your career trajectory. Highlight one significant early achievement or turning point.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n

        “I recently completed my B.Tech in Computer Science from NITK, where I focused on software development and data structures. During college, I built a real-time collaborative notes app that reached 200 users organically. I’m now looking for a role where I can contribute to building scalable products while continuing to grow as an engineer \u2014 and what drew me specifically to this company is your approach to developer tools, which aligns closely with the kind of work I’ve been exploring.”<\/p>\n

        A Sample Answer (Experienced)<\/h2>\n

        “I’ve spent the last six years in digital marketing, with the last three focused on performance marketing for B2C SaaS products. Most recently, I led a team of four at a fintech startup where we scaled paid acquisition by 3x while reducing CAC by 18%. I’m now looking to move into a Head of Growth role where I can combine that hands-on expertise with more strategic influence \u2014 which is what excited me about this opportunity.”<\/p>\n

        The One Rule<\/h2>\n

        End your answer clearly and confidently \u2014 don’t trail off. A strong ending signals composure. Try: “And that brings me to today \u2014 I’d love to tell you more about how my background applies to this specific role.”<\/p>\n
